This species of tuna can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh as much as 400 pounds, making it slightly smaller than Bluefin Tuna. The majority of U.S.-caught bigeye tuna comes from Hawaii where it is known as Ahi.
Bigeye Tuna are warm-blooded fish, meaning they can maintain a higher body temperature than the water around them. This ability allows them to travel long distances in cold water, like during their trans-Pacific migration, and dive into deep, cold water.
